The Stepfather

Overall
I thought the film had strong elements, an obvious plot line,  credible cast whom the general public would recognize and therefore want to see, and tense horror film moments.
The film wasn't bad, it wasn't amazing. It was ok.

1) What did i especially like about the film?
The opening. The first time i watched the film, i wasnt paying that much attention to the guy getting dressed and eating toast, so when i saw a dead kid on the kitchen table it freaked me out, making me pay more attention to the film
(Right) The camera pans down to suddenly show the dead boy, the creepiest bit. (Left) Shot shows the wreckage from the house, and the second dead body.

2) What did i think about the title sequence?
They were very discrete, if you didn't pay attention to the first few names, i don't think you would even notice them on screen as they were being dwarfed by the visuals.
For example, the names of the producers were presented against the setting such as a house garage, and the names of the actors where presented against the main character getting dressed. That's even more distracting as he is something to focus on, making it very hard to notice plain black fonts appearing and dissapearing from the screen.
(Left) The producers names contrast well against the white garage door, making it noticeable, especially as a garage door isn't very exciting. (Right) The actors names are presented against the main actor doing things, which makes the audience not notice the font.
By doing this it suggests that they want the audience to see the names of the companies involved much more than the names of the people acting in the film.

3) Who do i think the audience for this film is, and why?

I think the target audience for this film are females, and the age range could be from 15+. I think this because horror films are targeted at females because

  1. They have a better response at horror films and the specific scary scenes
  2. Males try and act tougher around the girls so they don't show the fear as much
  3. The film features actors that many females will be familiar with, for example, Penn Badgley who stars in Gossip Girl, another show targeted at females.

4) When was there an example of intertexuality?
In this particular scene, it has an essence of Psycho & The Shining.

  • Psycho because of the bathroom, and as he enters with a knife planning to kill the woman
  • The Shining because he's beating the bathroom door down planning to kill the woman
